Time flies! The year of 2014 is just around the corner, my tenure as the CASA President of 2013 is about to conclude. It has truly been my privilege to serve as the president of CASA. As you all know, CASA is a well recognized and prestigious organization for all anesthesiologists worldwide with Chinese background. For the year 2013, I have the great honor to work with such a highly motivated group of well-trained professionals. Now it is time for me to briefly review and share with you what we have done in 2013.

I.                   We restructured CASA infrastructure

In 2013, we restructured the infrastructure of CASA. We added Drs. Yunping Li, Weike Tao, William Zhong, Lixin Liu, Wei Cao to the Board of Directors. We set up a Seven-person Executive Board, which includes Henry Liu (刘恒意, President), David Yue Tang (唐越, President-elect), Vincent Xie (谢燎阳, Immediate-past president), Yunping Li (李韵平, VP), Henry Zhou (周海峰, VP), Tina Leung (田穗荣, Treasurer), Lixin Liu (刘立新, Secretary). CASA established several new committees including Investment Interest Group headed by Dr.  Henry Haifeng Zhou and Anesthesia Practice Management Committee headed by Drs. Honghui Feng and Jiapeng Huang. Also in 2013, Dr. Lixin Liu serves as the Chair of CASA International Affairs. And the date for presidency transition has been changed to New Year's Day starting next year. The CASA 2013 infrastructure is in attachment-1.

II.                CASA organized several delegations to China

     1. CAA meeting in April in Harbin
　

CASA organized a delegation to the CAA (Chinese Association of Anesthesiology) Annual Meeting in the northern Chinese city Harbin. CASA delegation to CAA meeting included Drs. Lixin Liu, Yun Xia, Huafeng Wei, Yanfu Shao, Jiabin Liu and Hong Liu. Drs. Lixin Liu and Yun Xia headed the delegation. The presentations from our members were well received by our counterparts in China, please see Attachment-2.

       2. 西安中国青年麻醉医师论坛

Dr. Lixin Liu traveled to Xi’an and attended the 中国青年麻醉医师论坛. She represented CASA to give lectures in Xi’an.

       3.  长江流域13省市麻醉学会议

Dr. Yunping Li attended this长江流域13省市麻醉学会议 held at her hometown, Changsha. She well represented CASA in the meeting in Changsha, please see Attachment-3

       4.  CASA中国边远省份麻醉学讲学团

       For the first time, we organized the CASA Remote Chinese Province Anesthesiology Lecture Group (中国边远省份麻醉学讲学团),and the group traveled to Gansu Province （甘肃省）this year. The CSA Director of Foreign Affairs, Professor Hong Ma(马虹) and the local host in Gansu Province made great efforts for the success of this project. The CASA Anesthesiology Lecture Group gave multiple lectures in Lanzhou, and had site visits to several local hospitals. The group included the following physicians: 夏云 （Yun Xia)，妇产麻醉，俄亥俄州立大学；彭勇刚 (Yonggang Peng)，心脏麻醉，福罗里达大学；田穗荣 (Tina Leung)， 普通和神经外科麻醉，纽约西乃山医院；李金蕾 (Jinlei Li)，局部神经阻滞麻醉和急性疼痛处理，耶鲁大学；唐越 (David Tang)，心胸外科麻醉, 加州Mercy医院；刘恒意 (Henry Liu)， 心胸外科麻醉，Tulane大学医学中心, please see the attachment-4 and 5.

 

       5. CSA meeting in Tianjin          
　

CASA also organized a delegation to attend the Annual Meeting of CSA (Chinese Society of Anesthesiology). The delegation had the following physician scientists as the representatives of CASA: Dr. Jie Zhou (周 捷)： CASA 代表团团长；Dr. Henry Liu (刘恒意)，Dr. Yong G Peng (彭勇刚），Dr. Huafeng Wei (魏华锋)，Dr. Yun Xia (夏云)，and Dr. David Y Tang(唐越), please see Attachment-6 

III.             CASA and Mindray signed a sponsorship agreement
　

Mindray Company headquartered in Shenzhen, China, signed an agreement with CASA to sponsor CASA’s annual meeting during ASA in October and sponsor the CASA Mindray Cup Golf Tournament during annual ASA meeting. Mindray BU Director Mr. Richard Yang and Dr. Henry Liu of CASA signed the sponsorship agreement representing both sides. 
　

IV.            CASA organized meetings in USA

1.     Chinese New Year party in New Jersey

As a tradition, CASA organizes an annual meeting around Chinese New Year. This year, CASA Annual meeting/dinner party was held at KC Restaurant located at 875 RT 1 South, Woodbridge, NJ. Many CASA members and their family members attended this dinner/meeting (over 80 attendees). The entertaining performance is also spectacular. Previously this meeting was also the meeting for CASA president inauguration. In order to better prepare for the New Year’s projects, this presidency transition was changed to the New Year’s Day starting next year. So the CASA 2014 president, Dr. David Yue Tang, will take over as the CASA President on the New Year’s Day 2014, please see Attachment-7

2.        SCA meeting in Miami

The 35^th SCA meeting was held in Miami from April 5th to April 10th. CASA organized a gathering for CASA members and other cardiac anesthesiologists with Chinese background. At least six (maybe more) CASA members (David Yue Tang, Yonggang Peng, Weidong Gao, Tao Hong, Hong Liu, and Henry Liu) and some CASA Honorary members (Davy Cheng, Albert Cheung) attended this SCA meeting. CASA members and some cardiac anesthesiologists from Mainland China had a nice dinner together, please see Attachment-8.

3.        CASA annual picnic in Tristate area

On August 7^th, 2013, CASA members in northeastern states had a very nice picnic at the Spruce Run Recreation Area in New Jersey. There were more than ten families joined the gathering. Interestingly on the same date (August 7^th, 2013), CASA members Drs. Lingqun Hu and Henry Liu had a nice meeting in Chicago, discussed the current issues & future considerations related to CASA, please see Attachment-9.

4.        ASA meeting San Francisco

The Annual CASA Meeting/dinner/party was held on "粤凯海鲜酒楼"的宴会厅 in San Francisco on October 12^th, 2013. There were about 110 people attended the event. ASA President-elect Dr. Jane Fitch, ESA (European Society of Anesthesiologists) President Dr. Eberhard Kochs, WFSA (World Federation of Societies of Anesthesiology) Chairman Dr. Yehia Khater, CSA (Chinese Society of Anesthesiology) senior representatives Drs. Huang Yuguang, Tian Yuke, Deng Xiaoming, Yue Yun, and ICAA leaders Drs. Zhiyi Zuo, Zhongcon Xie, Renyu Liu, Jianzhong Sun, Hong Liu etc attended this year’s CASA meeting/party. CASA event sponsor, Mindray COO Mr. Liu Jie, BU Director Mr. Richard Yang and Global Marketing Director Mr. Charles Xu and other administrative & sale staffs also attended our CASA party. This party was coordinated by CASA President-elect David Tang, and moderated by Drs. Qing Wang (San Jose), Chanhung Lee (UCSF), and David Tang (Sacramento). CASA President Dr. Henry Liu spoke to the meeting and he briefly reviewed CASA history and introduced the CASA missions and its current status. The CASA meeting and dinner were well received by all attendees, please see Attachment-10, 11.

5.        PGA meeting in New York

The PGA CASA luncheon was held on Dec 14^th (Saturday) from 12:00 to 2:00pm at the Jing Restaurant, located at 689 9th Avenue, New York.  参与CASA 聚会的有姚繁盛, 周海峰，李迺曦，王长征，谢燎阳, 田穗荣（Tina), 李军，李友竹（Michael Li), 周洁，宋京，李锋华，王晖, 王海明等CASA骨干。数十新朋老友畅叙, please see Attachmen-12. 

V.               CASA sponsored delegations from China

The Chinese delegation of cardiac anesthesiologists led by Dr. Lihuan Li of Beijing Fuwai Hospital visited the United States in late September and early October, 2013. The delegation was hosted by CASA and sponsored by Mindray Company. The delegation visited three major American medical centers:  MGH, Hopkins and Mayo Clinics, please see Attachment-13.  

VI.            CASA Mindray Cup Golf Tournament

The first Mindray Cup CASA Golf Tournament was successfully held at the beautiful Presidio Golf Country Club in San Francisco on October 12^th, 2013. The 7 participants are Charles Dai, Jay Jin, Henry Liu, Yonggang Peng, Chuck Tong, Charles Xu, Jie Zhou. The results: Chuck Tong won the First Place, Charles Dai won the Second Place and Yonggang Peng won the Third Place.  Charles Dai also won the closest to holes on 4^th hole and 15^th hole. Chuck Tong also won the longest drive on 18^th hole. Dr. Yonggang Peng coordinated the event, please see Attachment-14.

VII.         CASA WeChat Group (CASA美国华人麻醉医师微信群)

CASA美国华人麻醉医师 微信群已经由王清(wangqing2@yahoo.com)和胡灵群 (lingqunh@gmail.com)于今年中期建立，现已有很多华人麻醉医师参与，通过该微信群，我们可以讨论很多诸如PDPH,  difficult airway,  anesthesia safety，anesthesia complications 等与我们工作息息相关的话题.我希望有 更多CASA成员加入, 与大家分享家庭与健康，工作和休息，朋友情同学情等相关的话题。微信公司最近把每个微信群的最高限额由40人提高到100人。我们希望这个CASA微信群将会成为我们每天生活的一部分。

VIII.      CASA Membership

In order to increase CASA membership, CASA leadership this year made efforts in following aspects: 1. we contacted Chinese American Physician database in an attempt to use its group email addresses to reach those currently practicing Chinese American anesthesiologists. Drs. David Yue Tang and Ge Li are spearheading this effort; 2. Use our group email to encourage all CASA members to reach their anesthesiology network and link more Chinese American anesthesiologists to join CASA; 3. CASA is expanding by attracting more international Chinese anesthesiologists.  This year, CASA has seen some encouraging results.

IX.            Global Health Initiative

As part of the Global Health Initiative, 由胡灵群教授牵头的”无痛分娩中国行-2013” 于今年七月圆满结束，他们所到之处都得到好评。并有很多媒体报道。 详见以下链接http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/hqgj/jryw/2013-06-26/content_9425976.html, please see Attachment-16.

X.               CASA honorary members in 2013

Seven CASA honorary members attended this year’s CASA meeting and party. CASA issued Honorary Member certificates to them during this year’s CASA meeting. They are Drs. Philip Liu, Letty Liu, Lena Sun, Leila Mei Pang, Chingmuh Lee, Huang Yuguang and Fun-sun Yao. The certificates were signed by Drs. David Tang and Henry Liu. Prof. Hong Ma and Dr. Shanglong Yao were also granted honorary membership, but no certificate was presented yet.  Please see Attachment-15.

Overall, CASA had a great year. Again I am honored to serve as its president. Working with you all has been very fulfilling. It will be one of the most unforgettable experiences in my professional life.Now let's welcome Dr. David Tang as our new president and look forward to a productive year of 2014.
